Camera Bento – Photography for Lunch!

Fancy shapes and designs seem to be all the rage for lunch these days. Bento basically means a brought from home lunch but in common usage (at least in the US) it means a lunch made of food turned into art…or at least imitations of people, places, or things. I’m certainly no Bento master but I couldn’t find any instructions for making Bento that looked like cameras so I made my own! Now, kiddos can be picky so I came up with a more traditional rice based version and an “Americanized” sandwich version.

How to Make Camera Bento

Step 1
Gather your supplies!

Camera Bento Supplies

“Traditional” Bento style – Rice shape
– Steamed rice (sticky)
– Orange
– Color icing
– Spaghetti (about 6 strands – cooked)

“Americanized” Bento style – Sandwich shape
– Two slices bread (I used an Italian bread that was more oval than square to easier cut a rectangle shape)
– Fruit leather
– Slice cheese
– Sandwich meat

Step 2
Start Making the Shapes

“Traditional” Bento style – Rice shape
Dampen your hands to better handle the rice and begin forming the rice into a rectangle shape.

Step 3
Finish Making the Shapes

“Traditional” Bento style – Rice shape
Add an orange slice for the lens. Draw a viewfinder in the top left corner with the color icing. Then add a strap (if your lunch box has room) made of braided spaghetti.

“Americanized” Bento style – Sandwich shape
Fill bread with desired sandwich meat. Cut cheese into a circle for the lens and a small rectangle for a viewfinder and place on top of sandwich. Cut a long thin strip from the fruit leather and place ends inside sandwich on both sides to create the camera strap.

Step 4
Modestly accept the praise of the other moms. Or, as is more likely to happen, quietly giggle smugly at their glares of hatred that you are the cool mom.
