How to Make the Copyright Symbol on Windows, Mac, and iPad

“How do I make the copyright symbol?” is one of the most common questions I’m asked. Even though a copyright symbol © or other copyright notice is not required by law for your photos to be protected, it is still helpful to add one to your photos to remind people they are not free to take.

ALT 0169

For Windows computers, adding the copyright symbol is just a matter of remembering a few numbers. Press the alt key and hold it down. While holding the alt key, type 0169 ON THE NUMBER PAD and the copyright symbol will appear. Bad things happen if you try to type it on the number keys above your letters so don’t do it.

If you are using a keyboard without a number pad you will likely see a function key somewhere on the keyboard that will activate a number pad somewhere on your letter keys. In this case you’ll have to press and hold the function key before beginning the alt 0169 sequence. Do not release the function key until you have finished keying the numbers.

Mac users have even fewer keystrokes to remember to create the copyright symbol. Press the Option key (also labeled as the alt key) and while holding it down type g for the copyright symbol to be inserted on the page.

Believe it or not, you don’t have to download a special app to get the copyright symbol on your iPad, or iPhone for that matter. All you have to do is activate the Emoji keyboard. Like all things tablet, there are multiple tabs and buttons to tap to get to symbols but it is as symbol as several taps to get the copyright symbol once the Emoji keyboard is installed.

If you haven’t already activated the Emoji keyboard you can do so through the built in settings app. Open the settings app and then go to General – Keyboard – Add new Keyboard – Emoji.

Once the Emoji keyboard is installed you’ll notice a new button on your keyboard. In the bottom left, between the 123 toggle and the Siri button (marked with a microphone) there will be a globe button. Note that if you don’t have Siri, it will be between the 123 and the spacebar. Hold your finger on the globe for a moment and a list of keyboards will pop up. Select Emoji and you’ll see a row of tabs at the bottom of that keyboard. On the right side is one that is labeled !?#. Tap that tab. There are a LOT of symbols on this keyboard set. Swipe over to the left a few times and near the bottom right on a set of symbols.

Alternately, if the text methods are driving you crazy, you can download a free set of symbols from Graphics Software that lets you access the symbols from your shapes menu in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.
